ORICA-SCOTT all in for Ewan at Dwars door VlaanderenSun 19 Mar 2017
ORICA-SCOTT return to the Belgian semi-classic Dwars door Vlaanderen next week with a strong and speedy squad in support of Australian sprint sensation Caleb Ewan.
After being forced out of Tirreno Adriatico due to a crash on the second day of racing, 22-year-old Ewan returned to competition at yesterdays Milan - San Remo, achieving a top ten finish in his first ever monument.
“The team will be charged with protecting Caleb throughout the race,” said Sport director Laurenzo Lapage. “Because once it comes down to the sprint he has a big chance of competing for the victory.”
“With Mitch Docker and Roger Kluge in the squad and both in good shape, Caleb has a strong lead out train around him and we will be staying attentive and working hard to try and ensure the race climaxes in a sprint finish.”
In form Australians Luke Durbridge and Michael Hepburn return to the team after strong showings over the last two weeks in both Strade Bianche and Tirreno Adriatico and will enjoy some freedom alongside local classics specialist Jens Keukeliere.
The line up is completed with 2016 Paris Roubaix champion Mathew Hayman and Danish power house Chris Juul Jensen, giving the team strength, balance and experience.
“We have enjoyed a positive start to 2017 so far and we go into this period with positivity and confidence,” explained Lapage. “The squad is strong and we have excellent options with Luke, Michael and Jens in the eventuality that the race starts to split.”
“This is always an exciting series of races to be taking part in, the parcours will be challenging and the competition will be strong, you can count on it.”
Dwars door Vlaanderen is in its 72nd year and traditionally marks the start of the Flemish cycling week. The race covers 200kilometres and starts in Roselare and finishes in Waregem.
The bulk of the course is set in the hilly Flemish Ardennes and includes several iconic cobbled climbs such as the Taaienberg, Paterberg and the Oude Kwaremont all arriving before the finish.
