ORICA-SCOTT women find themselves boxed in on stage two of the Tour of Chongming Island

Sat 6 May 2017

The second and longest stage of the Tour of Chongming Island took place today with ORICA-SCOTT women boxed in on the final sprint to the line and rueing a missed opportunity to build on the good result of Sarah Roy on stage one.

The tough, windy conditions never materialised and a pedestrian 135kilometre stage saw some late attacks neutralised before the predicted bunch sprint played out with Jolien D’Hoore (Wiggle-High5) claiming the win and Roy in 18th for ORICA-SCOTT.

“In previous years we have seen some difficult racing with echelons forming as the race crosses the bridge between the Islands,” explained sport director Martin Barras. “But this year those conditions didn’t appear, we had little or no wind and that made for rather a benign race. A few teams tried to put others to the sword and attack, but nothing really came of it.”

“We had ridden a very controlled and disciplined race up until the final few kilometres where we made a mistake and let a gap form ahead of us. Wiggle High5 took full advantage of that gap and we found ourselves boxed in and never recovered.

“Full credit to Wiggle, we need to learn from these mistakes and keep moving forward, once you are swamped in that position as the sprint takes off there is not much you can do.

“Final stage tomorrow, another circuit much like stage one and everyone’s guess is that it will be another sprint finish that we will do our best to play a significant part in.”

How it happened:

Today’s stage two was a longer affair than yesterday’s opener, covering 135kilometres from East Changxing across to Chongming Island and was widely anticipated as the hardest stage of the three-day race.

Yet again a bunch sprint finish was expected, but the slightly more challenging parcours included a fourth category climb within the first 30kilometres and yielded early attacks into the sprint for the mountains points.

A lone breakaway rider held a lead of around one-minute after 80kilometres of racing with the controlled peloton happy to let her dangle out front.

With less than 20kilometres remaining the front of the race had come back together as the sprinters teams, including ORICA-SCOTT massed at the head of the peloton.

Late attacks inside the last ten kilometres were countered immediately by ORICA-SCOTT and Cylance-Pro-Cycling, ensuring that the sprint remained on the cards.

An aggressive finale followed with D’Hoore taking the victory ahead of stage one winner Kirsten Wild (Cylance-Pro-Cycling) and Roy for ORICA-SCOTT behind in 18th after struggling to break out of a crowded bunch.
