Strong second for Elvin on Ladies Tour of Norway stage one

Fri 18 Aug 2017

Tour of Flanders runner up Gracie Elvin had a strong sprint to finish in second place on today’s stage one of the Ladies Tour of Norway.

The 105kilometre undulating stage concluded with Elvin powering to second spot behind the stage winner Jolien D’Hoore (Wiggle-High5).

Sport director Gene Bates was really pleased with Elvin’s result, beating many top named sprinters.

“It was great result for Gracie, when you run second to a sprinter like D’hoore it really is a top result,” Bates explained. “We came into the tour really trying to support Gracie for today and we knew it could end up with a sprint.”

“There was a small climb with around three kilometres to go, it wasn't super difficult but it took the sting out of the pure sprinters legs and she was a bit fresher coming into the finish. She was focused on getting into the right position and it was really good for her to come away with a second place.

“It is a really big confidence boost for her coming into this block of racing leading up to potentially the world championships.

“It was good wide roads, a tailwind and fast all day. Almost every team had somebody they were backing for the sprint so they weren’t really trying to break up the race.

“It was the first road stage today, so everybody was fresh but I think the next two days will be hard with a tough finishing circuit tomorrow and a 160kilometre day on Sunday with decent climbs.”

How it happened:

After a short opening prologue yesterday, stage one road stage followed a 105kilometre undulating loop concluding with three finishing laps of a 6.2kilometres.

The race began steadily with no riders able to breakaway in the opening 60kilometres. As the race headed over the first climb of the day the peloton strung out but once again came back together.

It was later in the race as the peloton headed over gravel sections that the action happened and splits occurred, however, with no team’s really willing to create a breakaway the race finally concluded with a group sprint.
