Top ten for ORICA-SCOTT on stage one team time trial in Valencia

Wed 1 Feb 2017

The European season got underway for ORICA-SCOTT in Spain today at the Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana with the team putting in a top ten performance in the opening team time trial.

A difficult 38kilometre course saw the Australian outfit finish the stage in tenth place, two minutes down on eventual stage winners BMC.

“We knew it was going to be a difficult opening stage,” said Sport director Neil Stephens. “The course recon showed it to be really challenging but nevertheless we wanted to put in a decent effort and go as hard as we could for our first European outing of the season.”

“Our preparation has been good, but we came into the race not wanting to put any pressure on Adam Yates and Simon Yates to go for the general classification this early in the season.

“This now gives us the opportunity to target stage results and look at the race as four, one day events that we have every chance of doing well in.

“Tomorrow could potentially be a really good day for us. Everyday is going to be tough, but we had a good look at the stage during our training camp nearby in January and we will certainly be looking to give it a good crack.”

How it happened:

A challenging, undulating course awaited the riders on stage one with the 38kilometre route including the category three San Miguel de Salinas climb coming after ten kilometres.

By the time ORICA-SCOTT hit the course with seven teams left to start, the early time to beat had been set by CCC Sprandi Polkowice with 45:32.

The Polish team held onto the top spot until LottoNL-Jumbo crossed the line one minute faster to move into the hot seat with all the teams now out on the road.

ORICA-SCOTT moved into provisional third place with a time of 45:17 for the hilly 38kilometre route, eventually finishing in tenth place with BMC taking the stage win by a clear margin.

Tomorrow’s stage two covers 178kilometres from Alicante to Dunia and includes four category three climbs before leveling out for what should result in a bunch sprint at the finish.
