Omloop Het Nieusblad Dames - Race Overview

The ever-consistent Emma Johansson opened her Spring Classics account with a strong second place showing at the Omloop Het Nieuwsblad. The Swede was part of a four rider escape group that took shape over the Paterberg. With the finish line in sight, the lead group had been reduced to three riders and the first chase group had Johansson and company within sight. The trio managed to fend off the chasers with Amy Pieters (Giant Shimano) besting Johansson in the sprint. Lizzie Armitstead (Boels Dolmans) rounded out the podium.

“The chase group was closing quickly. Even with a half kilometre left, we weren’t sure if they were going to make it. They only had a handful of seconds at that point. Emma said she was exhausted coming into the finish,” Bates added. “She tried to get out of her saddle to start her sprint but had to sit back down again. There were three really tired ladies at the finish, and Emma was good enough to finish second today.” - Sport Director Gene Bates
