Simon joined us from Sky Procycling after competing for the Australian National Team at the Road World Championships in 2009 and 2010. Happy to have the opportunity to be part of the first Australian WorldTour team from inception, Simon kick started our successful maiden season with a win at the 2012 Australian National Road Championships.
The Victorian followed up the national title with the overall victory at the 2012 Tour Down Under. Two months later, he climbed to the top step of the podium in Italy after winning the monumental Milano-Sanremo from a three-rider move that included Fabian Cancellara and Vincenzo Nibali.
His recent success is hard-earned and long in the making. The 32-year-old paid his dues on a European Continental team, riding as a stagiaire with AG2R-Prévoyance in 2004. Simon stayed with the team for three seasons. His time there laid the groundwork for the results that would follow. He closed out his season with a win at the GP Montréal.
Simon took a thrilling stage victory at the Tour de France in 2008 on a mountaintop finish. The following year, he added a stage win at the Giro d’Italia and the Vuelta a España to his palmares to become the second Australian to win a stages in all three Grand Tours. His breakout season (2009) included not only the completion of the Grand Tour triple but also a win at GP Ouest France and top ten finishes at all three Ardennes classics.
