Australian climber Nick Schultz was the highest placed finisher today for Team BikeExchange at the one-day race ,GP Larciano, riding to 17th place to round out a busy weekend of Italian racing following on from yesterday’s Strade Bianche.
A powerful move by Nairo Quintana (Arkea Samsic) on the penultimate climb of the day saw the bunch shatter to pieces with a group of eight riders breaking away at the 35km to go mark.
The race then came back together once again with 15km remaining, before further attacks flew on the final climb where the race winning move was formed. From the reduced leading group, Mauri Ansevenant (Deceuninck – Quick Step), sprinted to the race victory with Schultz crossing the line in the second smaller chasing group for a top-20 placing.
“Another hard day to be honest, really hard to back up after Strade Bianche yesterday, really heavy legs but a lot of guys were in the same boat so you can’t really put it down to that it was just another hard day. I just had to keep pushing through the pain that I had from the very start.
“On the second to last lap I was quite aggressive, and the little move went away on the decent, but some big names missed it, so we just sat pretty calm in the group behind. It all came back together then it just exploded on the final climb through the feed section, I just missed a tiny bit to go with that group of eight or nine. There’s still work to do.”
