Schultz moves into second overall after making it a hat-trick of third places on the Queen Stage of Coppi e Bartali

Nick Schultz battled to his third successive third place finish on the Queen Stage of Coppi e Bartali to move into second overall with one day remaining.

Overall race leader Jonas Vingegaard claimed his second victory of the race to extend his lead to seven seconds over Schultz, while Italian Kevin Colleoni maintains his top-10 placing overall after an attacking ride on today’s tough stage in San Marino.

Nick Schultz:
“It was a really hard stage, and we knew it would very much be a race of attrition and because of that I was really conscious of making sure to be well fed and hydrated to be able to do something on the final lap.

We came down to the last climb and I was very careful and patient until about 200 meters to go and then I was kind of held on the right side of the road up against the barriers and couldn’t get through until the last 50 meters, but it was too late to go for the victory.

So, I’m a little bit disappointed today. It’s great to gain one position on GC and also to reward the hard work of the boys and this is probably the main reason why I’m disappointed with third today. I think tomorrow it will be a bunch sprint so I don’t know if I can be up there again, but I’ll try to do my best”.

Gene Bates (Sports Director):
“Today’s stage was very difficult with four thousand meters of climbing in only four hours, for sure it is not an easy day. The guys rode very well as a team supporting Nick all day long.

Kevin Colleoni made a really good move just before the finale and then a small peloton came to a small sprint and Nick was very clever. Unfortunately, he was a bit blocked near the fences and he wasn’t able to do his sprint fairly.

Third place is still a very good result, but if he got a clean run at the finish maybe he could have achieved a better result. The race is never over until the last finish line and so for sure we’ll try to win the last stage. We will see what happens.”
