Australian duo Lucas Hamilton and Damien Howson finished in the reduced bunch as stage two of the Tour de Romandie came down to another sprint finish.
Team BikeExchange has hoped to get fast finisher Dion Smith over the final categorised climb of the day, but with the New Zealander unable to follow the strong pace being set, attentions turned to making it safely to the finish.
In the end Sonny Colbrelli proved to be the fastest of the remaining riders at the head of the race, with Howson crossing the line in 17th, a handful of places ahead of Hamilton in 25th.
Julian Dean (Sports Director):
“It was a hard stage, there was nothing too technical about it, it was just tough and on the last climb whoever had the legs could follow. We tried to get Dion in that front group of 37, but he just missed out, but we had Lucas and Damo in there to protect our GC interests.
We just want to make sure that we stay in contention tomorrow and then we’ll be looking to the weekend, that’s when the real GC will start to emerge.”
