Santesteban shows her strength for 10th in an aggressive edition of Emakumen Nafarroako Klasikoa

Local Basque rider Ane Santesteban took her own opportunity on a wet and cold Emakumen Nafarroako Klasikoa, making it into a select group of five riders in the closing 30km before eventually finishing the hard one-day race in 10th place for Team BikeExchange.

The day began with Team BikeExchange rider Teniel Campbell heading away to the road in a move, but the Trinidad and Tobago rider was drawn back before the lumpy final when the race really came to life.

30-year-old Santesteban then showed her strength in the challenging conditions, jumping into a dangerous move amongst good company in the final 40km, before a larger group bridged across and more attacks flew from the group.

In the end, last year’s winner Annemiek van Vleuten was able to ride away with compatriot Demi Vollering and secure the race win, with Santesteban battling on behind in a small chase group for a respectable 10th place. Tomorrow the action continues with another one-day race in Navarra, raced on a slightly flatter but still challenging course.

“It is not the result we were racing for but I am happy. The whole team rode really well today, during the race I was in some good breaks and I just missed some legs in the final to stay with the first six riders.

The course was really hard and then with this weather it was even harder. It was cold and raining all the day, typical Basque weather but tomorrow we have another good chance.”
