A top-10 on stage 3 Vuelta a Burgos Feminas bumps Brown up to second overall

Stage one winner Grace Brown climbed to ninth place on today’s third stage summit finish at Vuelta a Burgos Feminas, to move back up the classification to second overall, despite setting the hard tempo all the way up the climb from one kilometre to go.

The day’s tactic was to go full in for the stage win with climbers Ane Santesteban and Amanda Spratt with Brown to set a fierce pace from the base of the final one-kilometre ascent to set up for the finish.

The 28-year-old took up position and quickly the peloton strung out behind and as the race entered the final 300metres as the road kicked up, Brown showed her strength remaining at the front with many riders struggling to stay on terms.

The key general classification contenders then launched past to contest the stage victory with Cecile Uttrup Ludwig coming out on top and Brown holding on for ninth. Santesteban and Spratt finished slightly but remaining in top contention overall, ahead of an important and hard day finishing up Lagunas de Nieblas tomorrow, where the GC is expected to shake up.

Grace Brown – 2nd on GC
“The plan today was for me to lead-out all the way up the last climb so that Spratty could be on my wheel and attack overt the top in the last couple of metres, but unfortunately Spratty at some point lost my wheel and wasn’t able to make the move.

We didn’t get the stage result we wanted, but I have moved into second overall and have the points jersey. Tomorrow is a big GC day; it is a fairly flat stage running into a long climb, so hopefully our two climbers will be able to do something there and take a good overall result.

Alejandro Gonzales-Tablas – Sport Director
“It was all going to plan until about one kilometres to go. The plan was to but the team in a position to go for a stage win. The team were pretty amazing today, all the girls worked hard and followed moves and at the end we committed to our plan. Some days the plans work and today it didn’t work out as we wanted.”
