Sixth for Yates on the first mountain test of this year’s Tour de France

The race headed to the mountains for today’s eighth stage of the Tour de France with Giro d’Italia podium finisher Simon Yates climbing to sixth, after making it into a select chasing group.

17 riders headed up the road mid-way through the wet day with Chris Juul-Jensen and Yates both represented for Team BikeExchange

The group remained up the road in pursuit of Wout Poels before attacks came on the penultimate climb, with Tadej Pogacar leaving the peloton in his wake and riding past the breakaway riders one-by-one to finish the day in the yellow jersey.

The first mountain test of this year’s race concluded with Dylan Teuns attacking the front chase group and holding on for the stage win, with Yates crossing the line in sixth place in Le Grand-Bornand.

Simon Yates – 6th
“Today was in the plan, we wanted to see how I felt when I woke up and at the start, I was tired, but I was still able to be there.

We wanted to give it a crack, I don’t know if that cost me a little bit in the final but I would prefer to be try and be there and go for the stage rather than not be there and not have a chance at all.

So, I gave it a crack and Chris was able to support me in the breakaway and then I just tried to do my thing on the climb but ran out of steam.”

Matt White – Head Sport Director
“Matthews picked up second in the intermediate sprint and moves to second in the green jersey competition and today we wanted to put people in the breakaway. There were a few breakaways in the first hour of racing and then we ended up with Chris and Simon in the break. Simon was a bit tired from yesterday but did all he could.

We couldn’t pull of the stage win today but we won’t be stopping there in terms of the style of racing we will be going after these next two weeks.”
