Australian Amanda Spratt climbed to eighth place on the brutal final ascent to stage two of the Giro Donne in Prato Nevoso.
The opening road stage of this year’s race always looked set to be decided on the 13km long summit finish, and so it proved as a late race breakaway was reeled in on the lower slopes of the category-one climb.
SD Workx then took control of the race before world champion Anna van der Breggen launched the racing winning move inside the final nine kilometres. The reduced bunch was then blown apart as riders battled the steep gradients in ones and twos, with Spratt fighting on amongst the chasers.
There was no catching Van der Breggen as she soloed to victory, while Spratt battled on valiantly to take eighth place across the line, 3’05” down on the day’s winner.
“I’m super happy today about my result which came after a not very easy opening stage. A big thanks go to the team who were amazing supporting me from the start until the last climb and particularly Sarah Roy who really helped me a lot all day long.
This top-10 gives me a lot of new energy and I’m looking forward to seeing what I can do in the next stages.”
Martin Vestby – Head Sport Director
“I’m really happy today both for Amanda’s result and also for the great teamwork. Everyone gave their best to help Amanda and she’s done a great job going up to Prato Nevoso.
I’m glad that Spratty has really found her legs again and today she recovered some time from the other GC contenders.”
