Stage one runner up Michael Matthews found himself at the pointy end of another bunch sprint finish at this year’s Tour de France, blasting to fifth place on a lengthy 10th stage into Valence and maintaining his second place position in the green jersey competition.
The stage result makes it the Team BikeExchange rider’s third top-5 finish so far in this year’s race and after successfully picking up 15 points in the day’s intermediate sprint thanks to the help of his teammates, plus more points on the finish line for fifth, Matthews maintains second place overall in the green jersey competition. After claiming another 50 points for today’s stage victory, Mark Cavendish extends his lead over Matthews but with plenty more tests to come.
Tomorrow the attention turns to the climbers with an exciting day of racing coming up with two ascents of Mont Ventoux on the menu.
Michael Matthews – 5th
“Coming into the last 30km there were crosswinds over the top of the final climb and Deceuninck-Quickstep tried split the bunch a bit but it all sort of came back together again.
Luka (Mezgec) and the boys did a really good job to position me there in the final, but Cavendish is just too fast these days and I had to settle for fifth.”
Matt White – Head Sport Director
“The boys did a really good job and opened up the first intermediate sprint so that the pure sprinters couldn’t get any points. Sonny Colbrelli beat us but Cavendish and the other guys didn’t get any more points for the green jersey competition.
Then the final was hectic, fast and it split a couple of times. Our boys where at the front and Michael has done not a bad job running fifth.
We’ve got a couple of times up Mont Ventoux tomorrow, it will be a big day for the breakaway and the plan is to have someone in it.”
