Spratt fights to 15th on Giro Donne Queen stage as crash takes its toll

Team BikeExchange leader Amanda Spratt battled through the pain to climb to 15th place on the brutal Queen stage of Giro Donne.

Australian champion Sarah Roy and Spanish climber Ane Santesteban guided Spratt into the foot of the final ascent to the finish line as the peloton trailed a strong two-rider breakaway by more than two minutes.

The bunch was then whittled down one by one on the climb, with Spratt eventually feeling the effects of yesterday’s crash as she dropped away from the select group inside the final five kilometres.

There was no catching Ashleigh Moolman-Pasio as she soloed to victory from the breakaway, while Spratt fought on to cross the line in 15th place.

Amanda Spratt:
“Today was a tough day. I really have to thank for team for all of their help and support. The girls were great today looking after me and putting me in the best possible position for the final climb.

I was never stressed and had the easiest ride possible until that point. The final climb was so hard, I tried to manage my effort as best as I could and I really left everything out there.

I had a lot of pain today in my back and glute from the crash yesterday and I hoped it would get better during the stage, but it was a tough battle all the way to the line. I’m definitely disappointed after all the hard work from the team I had definitely hoped for more.”

Alejandro Gonzalez-Tablas:
“Today was as hard as expected, it was the Queen stage and we had an aggressive race to get the breakaway going and we eventually has two strong riders get away on the second climb of the day.

For use it was good, we had three girls working hard for Spratty, to support her and deliver her into the final climb and they did an amazing job. Spratty was hanging in there in the pink jersey group, but she had some pain from the crash yesterday and she just couldn’t follow them to the line, but she fought all the way to the line.”
