Hungarian Barnabás Peák sprinted to second place as the second stage of the Settimana Ciclistica Italiana came down to a bunch sprint into Oristano.
Ethiopian climber Tsgabu Grmay made sure Team BikeExchange were represented in the early breakaway as he made it into the five-rider escape. However, the peloton kept the attackers on a tight leash all day and eventually reeled them back in with 60km remaining on the stage.
Further attacks were soon launched, and the peloton was split in two before a second breakaway group of four was formed. Despite the attacks there was no holding off the sprinters as BORA-hansgrohe hauled the escapees back one-by-one.
The opportunity fell to Peák to get in the mix in the sprint finale and the 22-year-old took his chance, sprinting to an impressive second place behind winner Pascal Ackermann.
“I’m very happy with today’s result, I’m glad that the team had the confidence in me to give me the chance to sprint. Andrey [Zeits] and Tanel [Kanget] positioned me perfectly in the final to allow me to start my sprint in a good position.
My legs were good enough for second place, which is a great result for me and the team, I’m really happy and being so close to a victory. I’m also a little bit disappointed, I also wanted to win, but we still have three days to go here and we’ll do our best to bring home a good result.”
