Roy fights to fifth on final stage of the Tour of Norway

Australian champion Sarah Roy sprinted to fifth place as the fourth and final stage of the Ladies Tour of Norway came down to a bunch sprint in Halden.

The peloton did allow a two-rider breakaway a sizeable advantage of more than six minutes earlier in the stage, but there was no repeat of the mistakes made on stages one and two this time. As the bunch raced onto the technical finishing circuit it was all back together, with Roy battling for position at the head of affairs.

It was a fast and hectic final lap as the pack raced around the streets of Halden, with Roy well positioned behind the Team DSM lead out. However, when the sprint opened up the 35-year-old was left with nowhere to go with riders spread wide across the road as Chloe Hosking sprinted to victory.

“The run in to the final finishing circuit was really fast with a lot of teams lining it up and hitting it hard. We had the full team looking after me the whole stage and riding the front to help bring back the break. Big shout out to Lucy [Kennedy] for all the work, and Urška [Žigart] for putting herself outside her comfort zone.

The three laps were quite technical and fast with a lot of corners in quick succession making it really tricky to make up places. In the final kilometres Trek, Movistar and DSM were taking control. Lucinda especially was driving it for Chloe. I did my best to box on with the other trains from behind.

I nailed my process goals and hit that final corner just about first wheel but more or less side by side with Chloe I think. Unfortunately, Chiara from Valcar who finished third came under me and kind of swept me out wider than I wanted and washed off some of my speed and once I got back into it a split second later there wasn’t any where for me to go.

I felt I had rider directly in front, and directly on both sides of me. Absolute frustration! One teeny thing and you go from an almost win to well down the ladder. I’m sorry to my team for no podium but do feel like I’m making great progress which is a positive.”
