Kazakh rider Andrey Zeits climbed to a strong seventh place for Team BikeExchange on today’s summit finish stage of La Vuelta a España, after riding himself in the main breakaway of the day, before going on the move in the final.
Giving himself every opportunity to take a stage win, the 34-year-old then went away with two other riders before the final climb to Pico Villuercas, before dropping them and then riding in hot pursuit of a solo leader Nicolas Prodhomme, with seven kilometres to go.
The remaining breakaway riders began chasing hard behind and eventually caught Zeits and the other riders between with Romain Bardet then launching the race winning move over the top to claim the stage victory. Behind, Zeits battled on to take a respectable seventh place after a big day out.
“Today my feeling was good, and the breakaway went fast and early after 10km. I tried the first time and again and finally then I was in the breakaway.
After that the road was up and down all day, before the last time I tried, and I attacked. I made a breakaway with two other riders and then after two of them dropped I was alone with five kilometres to the finish. Once Bardet caught us, I was empty, I tried all my best.”
