Groves inches closer taking a stunning second place on day two in Oman

Australian sprinter Kaden Groves went one better today, flying to a stunning second place on day two at the Tour of Oman for Team BikeExchange-Jayco, after just being inched out by Mark Cavendish for the victory.

Team BikeExchange-Jayco executed a fantastic lead-out, despite being a fairly young team, using up all their men within the final two kilometres to bring Groves onto the final windy sea-front stretch in a good position.
The 23-year-old darted for the line, neck and neck with Cavendish, to take his second podium finish of the Omani Tour, and allowing him to extend his lead in the young rider’s classification with four more stages still to come.

Groves’ final lead-out man, Campbell Stewart, also held on for seventh place; a strong showing in his debut race for the team.

“I had good legs and again we put ourselves in a position to win, and I was just beaten by a faster man on the day in the end. But again, I think we’re ready for the rest of the week and it’s exciting to see how we’re doing so early in the season and with a new bunch of guys.
It’s nice to be consistent, my legs were a lot better today, my shapes good, and the commitment by the team, I can’t fault it. Hopefully in the next days I can get that bit more luck and keep improving and we can get a win soon.
In general it was a pretty boring day, but pretty annoying actually with the direction of the wind, it was crosswinds all day but nothing strong enough to cause any splits.
The guys did a really good job, we decided to leave the run-in real late, it’s a small peloton here so we figured we could come from the back to the front quite easily, and we did that. We lined up with our full team, used all of our guys into the roundabout with around 2km to go.
In the end it worked out really well, it was a little bit sketchy in the final straight because the wind was right on our side but I was able to contest the sprint well.
