Unique rider stories will be highlighted, showing the never seen before side to the athletes. Witness them striving for success, bouncing back from trials and tribulations, and staying motivated through the unforgiving world as an elite athlete where everything is intensified.
“I always used to tell them, in strong words, preparation, if you’ve prepared right, you can race right. It developed into a joke over the time, if something would go wrong, he’d say preparation!” – John Yates (Simon Yates’ Father)
Simon Yates is no stranger to success with the Vuelta a España overall title under his belt, Tour de France jersey and stage wins and more recently a Giro d’Italia podium finish – but who is Simon Yates, a private star that never really gives an insight into how he truly feels. What really fuels the 29-year-old rider from Bury?
In Part 1 of ‘ON THE WHEEL’ we follow Simon Yates’ ‘Journey to the Giro,’ a major target for the Team BikeExchange-Jayco rider, as he heads to the iconic Italian Grand Tour for his fifth attempt, ready to try and conquer it once and for all. But can he do it?
Episode 1 – ‘Boy from Bury’, which will be launched on March 13th at 8am CET, provides a behind the scenes insight into Yates as a person. We hear first-hand from his parents, investigate how Simon became the rider he is today, the motivations, the struggles, what makes him a champion and why he is different to other riders.
The pressure is already building in his debut race of the season, all eyes are on him. Has the winter training gone to plan, is everything on track and has he got used to his new Giant bike?
Join this special journey to Giro d’Italia and feel part of the team. You’ve witnessed all the ups and downs of Yates’ journey so far; the crash and burn in 2018, when Yates led the race for 13 days, winning three stages along the way, before falling out of contention agonisingly close to the end on stage 19. The missed opportunity in 2020 following the team’s early withdrawal due to COVID-19, the bounce back in 2021 to take more spectacular stage wins and a phenomenal hard-fought third place.
What will 2022 bring, will 2022 be the season he can finally win it?
Future episodes will take you further inside Yates and Team BikeExchange-Jayco’s journey to the Giro d’Italia, before we turn our attention to other major goals. How are the team dynamics in 2022? How will Dylan Groenewegen and Michael Matthews work together at the Tour de France? Who are the women on the team? What are their back stories and what will happen as the world turns its attention to the Tour de France Femmes?
Don’t miss it!
