Dutch fast-man Dylan Groenewegen has taken his fourth victory in the Veenendaal-Veenendaal Classic with a dominant and powerful sprint finish.
The 28-year-old demonstrated his speed once again with a rapid dash to the line, claiming his fourth win of the season and his fourth in the Dutch one-day race.
Team BikeExchange-Jayco took charge of the race in the early kilometres as they controlled the gap to a breakaway group of five and despite crosswinds in the final 60km of the race splitting the peloton, the bunch reached the bell for the final lap altogether behind the break.
There were then several attacks as the pack closed in on the escapees, but Italian Alexander Konychev was quick to shut down the moves, and with 11km to go the race was back together.
Australian Kaden Groves guided his teammate Groenewegen through the tricky finale and into position inside the final kilometre, before the Dutchman opened up his sprint and raced away to take the win.
Dylan Groenewegen (1st):
“We were here with a young group of riders, most of them had a long break, but we positioned well all day long, and especially in the last corner I was in the perfect spot.
I am glad of this result, I am happy, the team is happy, especially because everything went as planned. We are on the right track.”
Tristan Hoffman (Sport Director):
“The team did a great job managing to control and come back to catch the breakway with only a few kilometres left in the race. Then we prepared in the best way possible for the final hundred meters and Dylan was in the best spot.
Once he is there, there are few people who can beat him in a sprint like today. I’m super happy and proud of the work done today by the boys and now we will fully focus on tomorrow’s race in Koln.”
