In His Own Words: Svein Tuft on Tour de Beauce Time Trial WinThu 28 Jun 2012
Although Christian Meier has been giving us daily updates out of Beauce, we decided to check in with Svein Tuft, too, after his big time trial win. Like Christian, Svein is racing Tour de Beauce with the Canadian National Team. Here’s what he has to say about his day.
I’ve done quite a few Beauces, and most of the time trials – even if they’re not always run on the same roads – have a similar scenario. They include really heavy, long, false flat drags through wide open fields. The fields leave us exposed to a lot of crosswinds, and it makes the time trial really tough. If your mind is in the right place, you’ll usually go well. Mental space is really one of the biggest factors in an effort like this one.
I struggled through the Giro with a little bit of sickness. I was hoping to go better there than I did. That’s life in a Grand Tour. It doesn’t always go well, and you never really know what you’re going to get in advance. Given my Giro and the long break, I wasn’t sure what I was going to get out of my legs in Beauce. I’m glad I came. Not only do I feel good, but Christian is riding well, too. I’m happy to help him go for the overall.
Christian and I are both in a good position to really shake the race apart in the last two stages. Both days are difficult, and I know we can make an impact. It’s good to be feeling like that again – to have that kind of strength again. I’m really excited to support Christian on the overall and see what opportunities we can create these next two days. We’re in a cool spot, and it’s really fun to be racing on home soil again.
Beyond Beauce, I’m really looking forward to racing the team time trial at the World Championships with ORICA-GreenEDGE. The team places a huge emphasis on the discipline, and it’s an objective around which I’m centering the second half of my season. Obviously, the Olympics have also been a huge focus. With Canada only having one spot, my participation in London is still up in the air. There’s definitely the hope that I’ll go, and I’m continuing to prepare as if I’ll be there.
Beyond these major goals, I’m looking to help out the boys at Eneco Tour, Plouay and Hamburg. Beauce has been a satisfying start to the second half of my season. I’m ready for everything that’s upcoming.
