A day for the breakaway on stage 8 of La Vuelta

Sat 31 Aug 2019

The breakaway owned the day for stage eight of La Vuelta a Espana as Mitchelton-SCOTT finished safely in the peloton.

After a furious start to the stage, 21 riders formed the day’s breakaway, with Nikias Ardnt (Team Sunweb) taking the stage honours.

With Astana Pro Team happy to relinquish the race lead again and with no representatives in the breakaway, Mitchelton-SCOTT saved their energy for more crucial stages to come.

Esteban Chaves:
“The beginning was pretty solid until the breakaway went away and unfortunately for us we couldn’t get anyone in the front.

"We were in all of the moves except that one. We missed the one that went but like always the team worked really well around Mikel and I.

“The final was a bit tricky with the rain but we saved our energy and are ready for tomorrow.”

Julian Dean:
“The objective was to have one of our guys in the breakaway and obviously we didn’t do that which is not something we’re used to, but you can’t get it right all of the time.

“The after that was to focus on conserving for tomorrow, looking after themselves and getting Esteban and Mikel to the line safely.”
