Adam Yates finishes fourth on the last stage of the 2016 Vuelta Ciclista al Pais Vasco

Sat 9 Apr 2016

ORICA-GreenEDGE completed the six-day stage race Vuelta Ciclista al Pais Vasco today with Briton Adam Yates the team’s best placed rider on the overall general classification in 32nd place.

Yates produced an excellent performance in the individual time trial to place fourth on the day with a time of 30minutes and six seconds for the 16.5kilometre course. The race was won by Alberto Contador (Tinkoff).

A difficult week unfolded in the Basque hills for the team after losing race contender Simon Yates to a heavy crash on the Queen stage. Former Australian road race champion Simon Gerrans twice came close to stage victories with third on the opening stage and second on stage three.

Sport director Neil Stephens acknowledged that it had been a tough week for the team.

“The mountainous route always makes it a hard race,” said Stephens. “Everybody had to race in the same conditions and unfortunately we suffered on a couple of stages.”

“It was a shame that we lost Simon (Yates) when we did and of course Simon (Gerrans) went close a couple of times but we want and expect more of ourselves from these kind of races.”

“Adam (Yates) produced a fantastic ride today,” continued Stephens. “It’s the first day that he felt close to 100% and he really went for it. The boys have been great throughout the week, I can’t fault their attitude or their work ethic.”

“We will look forward to the upcoming races now, spring is always a busy period and we have objectives that we want to realise. Once again I’d like to thank the fans who have been superb all the way through the race.”

How it happened:

The final stage of the 2016 Pais Vasco got underway today in the early afternoon drizzle in the city of Eibar. Christian Meier was the first rider on the technical course for ORICA-GreenEDGE and posted a time of 33.31” for the 16.5kilomeres.

The route started and finished on the flat urban roads but with a steep climb and slippery descent right in the middle, the whole field opted for standard road bikes rather than the specific TT bikes.

Dario Cataldo (Astana) posted the early time to beat with a ride of 31:03” which stood until Fabio Feline (Trek-Segafredo) broke the 31minte mark with a time of 30:56”. Adam Yates rode his way into the provisional top spot with a fast time of 30:06”.

Nairo Quintana (Movistar) almost produced the stage winning time of 29:18” but was beaten moments later by Contador who crossed the line with a time of 29:13”. Beating Sergio Luis Henao (Team-Sky) to take the race victory and stage victory at the last possible moment.

Contador waited until the last day to claim a stage victory and produced a measured performance in the time trial to seal the race lead.

ORICA-GreenEDGE are in action in France tomorrow at the 114th Paris-Roubaix.
