Adam Yates places seventh at La Classic Sud Ardeche

Adam Yates of ORICA-GreenEDGE has finished seventh at La Classic Sud Ardeche in Guilherand-Granges today, after a fast, undulating race, which saw Petr Vakoc (Etixx-Quickstep) take the win.

Sports director Dave McPartland was happy with the team’s overall performance.

“It was a really strong ride from Adam today, despite suffering from cramp in the closing stages of the race,” McPartland said. “He was a away with a group of five riders in a move which looked promising but then got brought back. To stay up there and finish strongly in the sprint is very promising.”

Both Adam and Simon Yates were together with Esteban Chaves and Amets Txurruka going into the final third of the race.

“The team went really deep into the race together today and all round I’m very happy about that,” continued McPartland. “It was pretty lumpy and tense at times out there today, we rode a really controlled race throughout.”

“Tomorrow is going to be three relatively flat and fast laps of 50 kilometres with the last circuit the business end of the race. We need to be attentive and race with intelligence without being too defensive. After today’s positive experience I think we’ll be ok.”

How it happened:

The French racing season got underway for ORICA-GreenEDGE today with a fast and hilly parcours that saw many riders abandon within the first two hours of racing. A breakaway of five riders managed to get away early on in the race and held a gap of around two minutes for most of the day.

The conditions were cold and pretty tense for the riders, with Etixx Quickstep and AG2R trying to control most of the action in the main peloton. The race ran up and down along narrow countryside roads, which contributed to the tension within the race.

Once the break had been caught the moves started to pop, with fresh attacks every time somebody got reeled in. Finally with around five kilometres to go something stuck. Adam Yates got in a group of riders who managed to push the pace up and take it all the way into a group sprint. Going into the final few hundred metres Yates was in an excellent position but got closed out on the last corner.

Tomorrow sees the team come back for more racing in the Ardeche with La Drome Classic.
