Affini second in penultimate stage time trial at BinckBank Tour

Mitchelton-SCOTT neo-pro Edoardo Affini has put in a strong ride to finish second in the individual time trial on the penultimate day of BinckBank Tour

Affini was just five seconds off the pace of compatriot Filippo Ganna (Team Ineos) who took the stage victory, a friendly rivalry that promises a lot in the future.

The result, the 23-year-old’s best at WorldTour level, puts together an impressive fortnight of racing for the Italian, who claimed the bronze medal in the elite time trial at the recent European Championships.

On the general classification front, there was no big change in the top three with Tim Wellens (Lotto-Soudal) slightly increasing his advantage to Marc Hirschi (Team Sunweb) to eight seconds, with Laurens De Plus third at 12seconds.

Edoardo Affini:
“It was a little unexpected but it’s always a nice feeling to be on the podium, satisfying for sure.

“I have been feeling good, but this time trial was quite short and normally I think time trials that are a bit longer are better suited to me.

“I had a plan with my coach Ben, but once I started, I didn’t end up following it too much. I felt really good and with such a short race I could go full gas the whole way and I think it worked out well in the end.

“I know Ganna really well, we have fought each other every year since we were 17. It’s good to have a rivalry with someone with the same nationality, but off the bike we are really good friends and it’s nice to have someone to look at and fight to improve.”
