Another Bunch Sprint at Boels Rental Holland Ladies Tour

Another flat, wind-less stage at the Boels Rental Holland Ladies Tour resulted in another bunch sprint. Chloe Hosking (Hitec Products UCK) beat out Kirsten Wild (Argos Shimano) and Shelley Olds (Team TIBCO) in the dash to the line on stage five.

Melissa Hoskins overcame bad positioning in the bunch to slot into sixth in the sprint and retain the best young rider jersey after five days of racing. Trixi Worrack (Specialized-lululemon) finished safely in the peloton in defence of her race lead.

“I was feeling okay today,” said Hoskins. “Okay but not great. All the girls were around me in the final, and I was lucky to have Gracie bring me up in the last kilometre. She got me where I need to be, and I was on my own after that.”

“There was a cross-headwind at the finish, so the race was in the left hand gutter,” Hoskins continued. “I was too far back. I made the decision to try to put myself in a better position, which meant being in the wind earlier than I should have been. I probably started moving up 600m from the line. I did what I could do, but with what the girls did for me, I was disappointed not to finish off their work with a podium place.”

Before the sprint, several teams sent riders down the road in an attempt to avoid the inevitable conclusion. Several small groups broke free from the bunch. None were able to gain a sustainable advantage.

“We had groups of two and three going down the road,” said Sport Director Dave McPartland. “No group was bigger than that. Specialized wanted to keep things together today. That was pretty obvious from the start.”

“We made sure to put girls in some of the little groups, but we found earlier that we were wasting energy trying to get something away when there is no wind,” McPartland added. “We had a pretty quiet day today. We’re saving our energy to come out guns blazing tomorrow.”
