Van Vleuten grabs time trial victory as Garfoot finishes second on the road stage in Auensteiner

Sun 12 Jun 2016

Elsy Jacobs prologue winner Annemiek Van Vleuten produced another great time trial today taking victory in the 7.6kilometre race against the clock on the first of two stages of the final day at Auensteiner-Radsporttage.

Van Vleuten finished with a time of 10minutes 26second, seven seconds clear of her nearest rival which catapulted her into the leader's jersey with one road stage remaining.

The second and final road stage of the race saw Katrin Garfoot finish in second behind race winner Ashleigh Moolman (Cervelo-Bigla) who attacked to win the stage solo and seal the overall classification with Van Vleuten concluding the tour in third place.

"I was really happy with this morning" explained Van Vleuten the race. "It was a time trial that really suited me with a bit of climbing, some technical parts and I also had really good power this morning."

"The nationals are coming up so it was a good final time trial and gives me a lot of confidence for that.

"Then this afternoon, I completely lost my good legs from this morning, maybe I went so deep in the TT that I couldn't recover for this afternoon. So I had a super, super bad afternoon I was unable to follow anyone on the climbs.

"It was super teamwork today, a few times when I dropped on the uphill Katrin and Rachel Neylan worked to bring me back, so it was really good for Katrin after all that hard work to finish second on the stage, it shows her good form.

"It was great today to see all the team support around me but of course I am super dissapointed with how I felt this this afternoon. Ashleigh was really outstanding today, she attacked on the climb and no-one could stay with her so a really great ride from her."

How it happened:

Stage 2a Time trial

Day two of Auensteiner-Radsporttage featured a double day for the riders with an early morning time trial on an undulating 7.6kilometre course, followed by another short 82kilometre road stage later in the afternoon.

In wet conditions Australian time trial champion Katrin Garfoot was one of the early riders to set the bench mark with the fastest time of 10minutes and 26seconds at the half way mark.

Van Vleuten, known for her strong performances in short, punchy time trials, blasted around the course to take the victory with seven seconds to spare. Garfoot eventually finished just shy of the podium in 4th place.

This impressive time moved the Dutch rider into the leader's jersey with just one stage remaining, thanks to her resulton yesterday's road stage, placing third without losing time to the winner.

Stage 2b Road race

Starting the stage as the leading team, ORICA-AIS tried to keep themselves as one unit and out of trouble in an attempt to retain their lead and secure the overall victory.

The second stage made up of nine laps began aggressively and it wasn't long until 36 riders lead the race ahead of the peloton after just three laps complete.

Moolman's strong attack gave her a large advantage finishing the stage solo and taking the overall classification, as Garfoot battled it out to finish second on the stage for ORICA-AIS.

The victory today marks a successful run for the Australian outfit, finishing on the podium in all three stages plus the wrapping up the race with a podium in the overall general classification.

ORICA-AIS are back in action on Wednesday 15th at the five-day Aviva Women's Tour.
