ORICA-AIS on the hunt for victory in their final stage race of the season-Boels Rental Ladies TourFri 26 Aug 2016
ORICA-AIS head to Holland next week for their final stage race of the season, the six-day Boels Rental Ladies Tour.
With a well-rounded team, the squad is ready to tackle the 19th edition of the race which features a mixture of flat, technical stages, a team time trial stage and a challenging final stage in the Ardennes.
The Australian outfit has enjoyed success at the tour in previous years, with a final stage win and fifth place overall back in 2014 along with third place overall in 2012.
“It’s a tricky race, it is such a mixed bag as to what can happen,” explained sport director Gene Bates. “If there is wind it can be a really hard race like the Energiewacht Tour earlier this year, with small splintered groups coming into the finish.”
“If there is no wind then it will be more likely for big bunch sprints everyday. You really don’t know what to expect until you get into the racing.
“The team time trial on the second day will obviously have a big impact of the general classification early on and then the final stage up the Valkenburg is hard and that will be a really testing day."
The six-day event gives the team the opportunity to race for six consecutive days in the hunt for stage victories as they begin to wrap up their successful 2016 European campaign.
Sprinters Loren Rowney and Sarah Roy will be the team’s main options for the bunch kicks, along with Gooike-Geraardsbergen-Gooike winner Gracie Elvin.
Then the powerful trio of Tayler Wiles, Katrin Garfoot and Amanda Spratt will be scouting out breakaway opportunities and all have the potential to shine on the final hilly stage.
“We will search out stage wins and breakaway opportunities,” Bates continued, “Then for the final stage we have some riders who have shown in the past they are capable of getting around that course and can pull out a good result.”
“I think we have riders for most situations that can arise during this tour. It’s a really good opportunity for us to finish the season off well in a good manner.”
The team begins racing on Tuesday 30th August in Tiel, Holland before making their way down to the final stage in Valkenburg.
