Fri 27 Apr 2018

Basque rider Mikel Nieve was the highest finisher for Mitchelton-SCOTT today on the third stage at the Tour of Romandie in 17th place in a challenging uphill individual time trial.

Primoz Roglic (LottoNL-Jumbo) remains the overall race leader, but the rest of the general classification saw a shake up after Egan Bernal (Team Sky) won the stage and jumped to second place on GC.

The course

The mountain time trial covered 9.9kilometres, with a 785metre ascent from Ollon up to Villars with an average gradient of 7.9% and sections as steep as 10%.

Early leaders

In the opening stages Tom Bohli (BMC) held the fastest time of 29minutes 07seconds but as the climbers finished one-by-one the time was shattered as Fuglsang (Astana) crept under 27minutes after the half-way point. In the end the winning time was a blistering 25minutes 10seconds by Bernal.

Mikel Nieve - 17th place

"The TT of today was pretty hard on a long and constant climb. I'm quite happy with my feelings that I'm having, day by day I'm feeling better so it's good sign.

"Tomorrow we have a big day through the mountains and I'm looking forward what can happen. The GC is quite close betwen Roglic and Bernal and also a lot of riders will try to improve this place. I think that we will have a big battle from the start and we will try to be there."
