Changes to the overall classification after a time trial day in Vuelta al Pais Vasco

Thu 5 Apr 2018

Neo-pro Lucas Hamilton was the highest place finisher for Mitchelton-SCOTT today in 25th place, on the fourth stage, a 19.4kilometre individual time trial.

Australian Jack Haig finished just behind in 29th place to jump up two spots overall to 15th place with two of the hardest, hilly stages still to come.

Early leader

Patrick Bevin (BMC) set the early bench mark in the 19.4kilometre race against the clock with a time of 22minutes and 35seconds.

Bevin started early and spent almost the entire race in the hot seat with no-one able to beat his time on the flat course from Lodosa to Lodosa.

It wasn’t until the penultimate rider to start, Primoz Roglic (Lotto-Jumbo), who ruined Bevin’s chances by stealing the stage victory by nine seconds in the final moments of the day.

Change to general classification

The stage see’s a change to the overall with Roglic the new race leader with a 34second advantage as the race heads to the two hardest stages of the week filled with category one climbs.

Haig remains as the highest rider on the GC for Mitchelton-SCOTT now at two minutes 29seconds behind.

Jack Haig - 15th overall

“The course today was super super fast and you can see that with the average speeds that the top guys did today. We had a little bit of wind which effect things a little bit in some of the big open sections, then coming home was a tail wind and super fast after the small climb in the town.”

“I felt pretty good, it isn’t often I get to go 100% for a time trial, normally if it’s in a grand tour I use it as bit of a rest day. Here I think I just a lack a little bit of experience in time trailing and hopefully over time with some more practice and confidence I should be able to get a bit better."

“I finished with the best result I could do at the moment and I am happy to go into the last two stages were I am on GC and hopefully try somethings in the mountains. I think we have opportunities to race the race the last two days, the course is super hard and now after the time trial there will be guys looking to mix up the GC and attack Roglic and his team.”
