Consistent Cort takes fifth on the last stage of the Tour of Guangxi

Tue 24 Oct 2017

The 2017 season came to a close for ORICA-SCOTT in China today with Danish fast man Magnus Cort again showing his speed with fifth in the sprint on stage six of the Tour of Guangxi.

A race with more than one eye on the sprinters, with five out of the six stages climaxing in high-speed and flat finale’s, ORICA-SCOTT showed consistency with two third place’s and sixth on stage two from Cort who also achieved the team’s highest placing on GC with 12th over all behind winner Tim Wellens (Lotto-Soudal).

Fernando Gaviria (QuickStep-Floors) claimed his fourth stage win on today’s last day of racing with Cort positioned well by lead out men Roger Kluge and Jens Keukeleire and producing another solid result for fifth place.

“The boys rode well again today and tried their best to get Magnus in a good position to contest the final,” said sport director Matt Wilson. “As per the last few days it was super fast going into the closing kilometres and quite hectic and in the end we were a little bit too far back on the last corner.”

“It was an impressive effort from the guys this week, but unfortunately we didn’t come away with the results that we were looking for. Nevertheless it has been a great experience and a solid bookmark for the end of the year.

“The level of organisation here has been very impressive all week and the support was fantastic, pretty incredible for a first year race. We are definitely looking forward to coming back next year. Now we can enjoy some downtime and continue with our preparations for next year.”

How it happened:

The sixth and final stage of the inaugural Tour of Guangxi proved to be no different than those that preceded it with a fast start from the gun and three riders jumping clear immediately.

The peloton were happy for the move to go and after 40kilometres of racing the leaders had nearly five minutes on the bunch.

Holding their lead into the halfway point the trio started to lose time with around 70kilometres to go as the peloton upped the pace with the sprinters team’s coming to the fore alongside Lotto-Soudal.

The gap fell rapidly over the closing kilometres with ORICA-SCOTT and QuickStep-Floors moving to the front to contribute to the chase and fight for position.

Finally caught inside five kilometres to go the trio sat up as the peloton sped by, a crash threatened to disrupt the sprint, but the majority of the field were not affected as Gaviria went on to claim his fourth victory of the race.
