Edmondson fifth on opening stage of CRO RaceTue 1 Oct 2019
Former Australian champion Alex Edmondson finished in fifth place in a tight opening stage sprint at CRO Race today.
With 200km to cover, the longest stage of the race, the bunch was happy to give four escapees a substantial advantage of over eight minutes before they began to peg in the deficit.
Mitchelton-SCOTT used its stagiaires, New Zealand champion James Fouche and Hungarian Barnabas Peak, to contribute to the efforts before the final rider was eventually caught with four kilometres remaining in the wind up for the sprint.
Edmondson sprinted from behind but was unable to pass the leading riders, with Marka Kump (Adria Mobil) declared the victor in a photo finish and the Australian settling for fifth place.
Briton Adam Yates collected a bonus second during the stage to sit in seventh place overall, nine seconds behind today’s stage winner.
“It was an interesting old day. With no clear proper sprinters here it was a bit all over the place and Bahrain tried to split it in the crosswinds with 160kms to go.
“Both James and Barnie rode the front for majority of the day with Callum helping as well.
“Coming into the finishing circuits it was really hectic with a lot of corners. I managed to surf around and ended up coming from a long way back from the last corner.
“It’s my first real opportunity to go for a gallop for a while so it was nice to be up there and it’s given me confidence for the next couple of days.
“The boys did an awesome job for me today; on to tomorrow.”
