Edmondson opens with a third place at the Down Under Classic

Former Australian champion Alex Edmondson has kicked off the week of racing in Adelaide with a third place in the Down Under Classic, as the precursor for the WorldTour event starting on Tuesday.

Edmondson rounded out the podium behind former teammate Caleb Ewan (Lotto-Souda) and former world champion Peter Sagan (Bora-Hansgrohe), whilst earlier in the day veteran Mathew Hayman was very active in trying to force a breakaway in what is the final week of his professional road racing career.

Alex Edmondson – Third Place:
“Daryl Impey did a great job to move me up with one lap to go, before I tried to slip into the wheels for the sprint.  It's always a bit sketchy around the corners in sprints, and we saw a crash there on the last lap, but I managed to get around OK.  I didn’t do a lot in the final straight, just managed to hold the wheels and slip in for third.

“It was great to have Caleb in the team but it’s also nice to get a couple of opportunities myself. I was a bit nervous before the start, but it’s always good to get the chance to have a go in a bunch gallop.”

Down Under Classic – FINAL Results:
1. Caleb Ewan (Lotto-Soudal) 1:03:59
2. Peter Sagan (Bora Hansgrohe) ST
3. Alex Edmondson (Mitchelton-SCOTT) ST
