Ewan has to settle for second place on the opening stage of the OVO Energy Tour of Britain

Sun 2 Sep 2018

Sprint star Caleb Ewan finished in a close second place for Mitchelton-SCOTT on today's opening stage of the OVO Energy Tour of Britain into Newport.

The 24-year-old put himself in a position to take the stage victory, however Andre Griepel (Lotto-Soudal) lunged across the line to steal the race win just ahead of the young Australian.

Six-riders break free

The opening 175km stage saw a group of six riders form the day's main breakaway and within the first 15kilometres they had forced an advanatge of almost two minutes.

Team Sky, Quickstep-Floors and Mitchelton-SCOTT patrolled the front of the peloton for the majority of the stage to keep the six leaders within a confortable distance ahead.

Action in the final

As the finish line drew closer, the breakaway group was gradually reeled back towards the peloton until all the riders were finally swallowed up with 15km left to race.

Immediately as the peloton all came back together, attacks began to fly with riders trying to get away and ruin the chances for the sprinters. Bob Jungles (Quickstep-Floors) led the race solo in the closing kilometres but was caught with one kilometre to go as sprint trains charged and the sprint opened up.

Runner up

Ewan found himself in a good position and opened up his sprint with a clear run for the line but it was Greipel who came out on top, throwing his bike past in the closing metres to take the stage one victory.

Caleb Ewan

"The team were great today, Lucas Hamilton rode on the front for the majority of the day to keep the break close. My final sprint was okay but not great.

"I was happy to be up there in the final but I think I’ve got a bit more speed in me. I’m really motivated already for all the sprint stages so I’ll be doing my best and giving myself the best chance possible."
