February recap & reactions

Mon 3 Dec 2018

After an action packed and successful opening month of the 2018 season, the riders spread out across the world in February, claiming four victories in three different continents.

Esteban Chaves and Caleb Ewan hit the ground running with the Colombian rider winning his first race of the season at the Jayco Herald Sun Tour before Australian sprinter Ewan clinched his first European victory in Almeria.

Over in South African, things all came together for the new Tour Down Under winner Daryl Impey as he fought off multiple teams to claim his first ever South African road title to add to his growing collection of national time trial titles.

Here’s a recap of our winning riders post-race reactions:

Esteban Chaves - 2018 Jayco Herald Sun Tour champion
“It’s a really nice feeling to win here in the home country of the team. We are really happy with the team, we rode really well.

"We raced this year different, every climb was full gas with the breakaway really close. It was intense but the team did very well so thanks very much to all of them. It is unbelievable to have one, two, three overall.

“I think this is only the second general classification I won in my career so it is very beautiful and I am really happy.”

Daryl Impey - 2018 South African Road and TT champion
“It feels so good to win, I have lost a few championships after some bad luck so it was about time luck was in my favour. It is a nice relief to finally get the jersey, you always have these races that you want to win and finally I can tick off this one.

“It is always nice to win the time trial also, every year there is always a bit more pressure. I was confident after Down Under that I would come here and be able to do a good ride, it was really hard and I am super happy with it.”

Caleb Ewan - 2018 Clasica de Almeria winner
“It’s really good to hit the ground running in my first European race and it was good to have the full lead-out squad behind me.

“I felt pretty tired during the day because we did five hours training yesterday, so I didn’t feel great but in the final when the adrenalin kicks in I felt alright and overall it was a good day.”
