First foray into the mountains shakes things up at the Tour of Qinghai LakeWed 25 Jul 2018
A challenging fourth stage at the Tour of Qinghai Lake in China shattered the peloton over the climbs with Australian Drew Morey the best placed rider for Mitchelton-BikeExchange, but now out of the running for the general classification.
Today’s stage four was a short one at only 100kilometres but included both first and second category climbs before the finish, and unsurprisingly there were splits within the peloton immediately as the road began to rise.
Morey was within the first part of the peloton on the first climb before the Colombian riders put the hammer down and split the group again with a reduced bunch of pure climbers disappearing up the road.
Eventually that whittled down to a group of three riders on the final climb which contained two Colombian riders from the Manzana-Postobon team in what proved to be a dominant showing by the South American climbers.
The leading trio maintained their advantage down the final descent and it was Hernan Aguirre (Manzana-Postobon) who eventually hit out to take the victory as the road levelled out and then rose briefly towards the line, with teammate Hernando Bohorquez in second.
Morey finished in 35thplace within the third group on the road on what was a challenging first mountains test and the team’s focus now shifting to stage results with sprinters Kaden Groves and Jacob Hennessy.
Sport director Dave Sanders:
“It was a hard day for the guys out there today. The Colombians just rode away over the climbs and held their lead all the way to the way to the finish. We’re out of contention for the general classification now and our focus will be entirely on going for stage results with our sprinters.”
“There is still a long way to go with nine more stages to come and it is important for us to remain positive there will be opportunities for us to try and get that stage win and after Jacob’s second place on stage two we are confident that we can do well in the sprints.”
