Garfoot 13th in Borsele time trialFri 24 Apr 2015
Oceania time trial champion Katrin Garfoot rode her way to 13th position at the first European individual time trial event for 2015, the EPZ Omloop van Borsele WE in Holland this evening.
After 19.9km of racing, Garfoot stopped the clock at 27minutes 46.33seconds, one minute and 31seconds behind Ellen van Dijk (Boels Dolmans CT) who took her fourth consecutive win at the event in windy conditions.
In promising signs, the 33-year-old and ORICA-AIS staff have identified a number of achievable improvements that will help see Garfoot break into the top ten in the near future.
“I thought Katrin had a really good ride,” sport director Gene Bates said. “But there is a good chunk of things that she can work on, which is a really good position to be in.”
“She is already in the hunt for a top ten position but she has a lot of things she can improve on so she can take a lot of positives out of that.”
Road captain Loes Gunnewijk finish in 29th position, a result she will want to work on before the Dutch championships later in the year and 2014 junior champion Macey Stewart also debuted in the senior time trial ranks with finishing 36th.
“We really weren’t sure what to expect from Macey coming into this event,” Bates said. “Obviously it was her first senior race and the first time trial for the season for her.”
“Her preparation wasn’t specific for this, it was just a good experience for her.
“She had a good ride, she ran a bit out of legs towards the end and that’s pretty typical of a first year senior going into an event like that. But she had a good showing and she will take a lot out of it.”
The EPZ Omloop van Borsele WE action continues tomorrow with a 136.8km road race that could see winds, if they maintain, play havoc on the flat course.
