2015 Oceania time trial champion Katrin Garfoot has put in a strong performance for fourth on the penultimate stage time trial at the Giro d'Italia Internazionale Femminile today.

After two tough mountain stages, the 33-year-old was looking forward to the 21.7km race against the clock.

At her time of completion, Garfoot was the fastest finisher by one minute and remained in the lead right until the final set of riders finished.

After all 110 riders she was pushed down to fourth, narrowly missing the podium by less than a second. Rabobank-Liv’s Anna Van der Breggen put in a blistering ride to win by over a minute.

“It felt like I was waiting to win the lottery,” Garfoot joked of her long stint in the hot seat. “It was pretty intense, I couldn’t talk to anyone.”

“I was pretty early off so I knew the good girls were coming later. I was sitting there full of nerves for quite a while.”

Entering the penultimate day of racing out of general classification consideration, today’s time trial was a real focus for Garfoot.

“We prepared well for it,” Garfoot said of the stage. “We went twice and I got a video of it so I had looked at it quite a lot.”

“Then when the Tour didn’t work out for me as I thought it might, I started to target it more and more. When the 40degree day happened I was still only four minutes behind and I thought that it was OK still but after I had a flat yesterday that forced me to not ride with the top girls and rest my legs, that’s what I did.

“I am a very critical person, I always pick up on something that I could have done better but generally I put everything I had out there. Gene (Bates) was really good in picking up when I dropped the pace and he would scream at me over the radio so that helped.”

Sport director Gene Bates was really happy with the ride, despite the anxious wait after racing.

“It was a really super ride in all respects,” Bates said. “She bounced back hard from a tough week and to get that result is really fantastic for her and I think it’ll give her a lot of confidence moving in to the next phase of the year.”
