Garfoot second on final stage and fourth overall at Festival Elsy Jacobs

Oceania time trial champion Katrin Garfoot has claimed second place from a three woman break on the final stage of Festival Elsy Jacobs in Luxembourg today, moving herself up to fourth overall.

The result is ORICA-AIS’ second podium in as many days, following a third place by teammate Amanda Spratt from a four-rider breakaway yesterday.

Under the guidance of team leader Emma Johansson and with the support of Spratt, Garfoot bridged across to a two-rider move on the second of four finishing circuits.

The call proved to be correct, the trio narrowly withholding a reduced peloton in wet conditions. Breakaway companion Floortje Mackaij (Liv – Plantur) claimed the stage and Anna Van der Breggen (Rabobank – Liv) secured the overall victory.

“On the third last lap Emma said I should attack with one kilometre to go on the climb,” Garfoot said. “Spratty set it up before so I attacked over her to bridge over to the two girls that were already away and that worked really well.”

“For the first lap we all worked, then Rabobank were just sitting on and there was just two of us working.

“In the end it was clear that it was going to be close but why not give it a shot.”

Garfoot was enthusiastic about the team’s work this week, already looking forward to the next phase of racing after the team training camp.

“I think it was what our team really needed,” Garfoot said. “It lifted the spirit and showed we can play with the big girls and I can’t wait to take that attitude into the next race.”

Sport director Gene Bates was equally pleased, particularly at the manner in which the outfit rode as a unit.

“Probably the most pleasing thing to see were the team rides,” Bates said. “Everyone knew their role and really stuck to that over the last three days.”

“When they all do that and they follow the process, the results come at the end of it.”
