Gerrans leads ORICA-SCOTT at De Brabantse Pijl

Former Milan-San Remo and Liege-Bastogne-Liege winner Simon Gerrans will lead ORICA-SCOTT at the Belgian one-day event De Brabantse Pijl on Wednesday, with the Australian outfit looking ahead to an aggressive finale.

After an embattled day out at yesterday's Paris-Roubaix the team continue classics racing in Northern Europe with the start of the hilly Ardennes one-day races just around the corner.

A strong team line up in support of Gerrans with Volta a la Catalunya stage winner Daryl Impey set to enjoy a free role and Belgian Jens Keukeleire looking to capitalise on his strong performance at the recent Gent-Wevelgem.

“Simon Gerrans is our leader for Wednesday’s race,” said Sport director Laurenzo Lapage. “However we have a squad that boasts a lot of strength in depth and we are fortunate to have the likes of Daryl and Jens, both in form and waiting in the wings.”

“It will be very important to race aggressively, especially in the late final so we are not forced into a position where we have to work to bring the race back together.”

Australians Michael Hepburn, Jack Haig and Robert Power will all play supporting roles alongside the experienced Canadian strong man Svein Tuft and the returning Chris Juul Jensen.

“We have an excellent squad for this race,” continued Lapage. “Very strong, with what we hope is the right balance of youth and experience for this type of race with the fast finishing circuits.”

“Of course the competition will be stiff and it is always a hard race, but we have been performing very well and consistently throughout 2017 so we can approach De Brabantse Pijl with confidence and a positive attitude.”

The 57th Brabantse Pijl takes place on Wednesday and is the precursor to the hilly Ardennes Classics, the race is part of the Flanders Classics series and covers 205kilometres and 26 bergs or hills.

The finish comes only 200metres after the final climb with the finale comprised of three fast finishing circuits of 23.4kilometres that include five sharp climbs around five kilometres apart.
