Grmay Tsgabu to lead Mitchelton-SCOTT’s GC ambitions in his debut race the UAE Tour

Thu 24 Jan 2019

Mitchelton-SCOTT's new signing Grmay Tsgabu will kick start his 2019 season next month with the team at the new seven-day UAE Tour.

With the fairly hilly and challenging nature of the course, the Ethiopian rider will be given full support as the team's general classification leader in what will be his first race in Mitchelton-SCOTT colours.

A motivating start

The opportunity to lead the Australian outfit's GC ambitions in his debut race fills Tsgabu with a lot of confidence and added motivation to be ready for a strong showing in the event.

Tsgabu - "To start my first race as leader with my new Mitchelton-SCOTT team is an amazing opportunity for me and an extra motivation for me to work hard and to start the season with big motivation I think.”

“I believe I must give everything I have and be ready mentally and physically for this race because I must use this opportunity as leader and thank my team for giving me this opportunity and also for believing in me to lead the as the GC rider.”

A debut race in an inaugural tour

After many years of WorldTour racing in the United Arab Emirates with two seperate races in the Dubai Tour and the Abu Dhabi Tour, 2019 will see the races combine to make this new seven-day race from the 24th February to the 2nd March. The event will cover each of the different areas with stage one taking place in Abu Dhabi before finishing in Dubai.

Tsgabu - “I did last year only the Abu Dhabi Tour, never the Tour of Dubai, so I think it is going to be an amazing race and the course looks good for different kinds of riders. I can't wait to start this new race.

I enjoyed racing a lot last year in Abu Dhabi, it was very good organisations and amazing weather because it is more less similar like my country weather so I also believe it is good race to start the year with.”

African Continental Championships

Before joining his Mitchelton-SCOTT teammates in the Middle East, Tsgabu will first have a hit-out race to test the legs with the national team the week prior at the African continental championships, which take place this year in his home country of Ethiopia, from the 13-18th February.

Tsgabu - “My off-season has been good like always but my numbers are better than last year's. This makes me so happy now and it can helping me to start the year with big confidence and to work hard more for the big goals we have with my team.”
