Groves makes the break for another top ten in China

Thu 20 Sep 2018

Mitchelton-BikeExchange continued their run of impressive performances on stage three of the Tour of China II today with Kaden Groves finishing in seventh place and maintaining second overall with two more stages to come.

Groves rode strongly and made it into what turned out to be the key attack of the day on the short circuit race around Zuhai. The move went on the third lap with ten riders going clear, working well together to hold off the peloton and on the final lap sizing each other up to contest the stage.

In the closing kilometres the bunch was gaining ground and the ten leaders held an advantage of mere seconds when Seid Lizde (Androni-Giocattoli-Sidermec) took the initiative and attacked his companions to take the solo victory.

The sprint for second and third was hectic and Groves settled for seventh, holding onto second place on GC going into Saturday’s time trial with Sam Jenner close behind in fifth and Zhi Hui Jiang still comfortably leading the best Asian rider classification.

Sport director James Victor:

“Kaden actually fell into the breakaway today, he was on the front foot competing for bonus seconds at the intermediate sprint and that group ended up staying away. It condensed from 12riders down to ten and at one point they had over a minute on the bunch.”

“They worked well together, there wasn’t that much cohesion in the peloton until the closing laps when Willier decided to take it up and slowly started to claw back some time and it was down to only two seconds by the end, but Kaden rode well and is still second ahead of the ITT on Saturday.

“We’ve got a long rest/transfer day tomorrow and as we have said each day the focus is all about Saturday. I’m confident that Kaden and Sam can both do well, but the top ten on GC is very tight and separated by only 27seconds.”
