Groves steps up in the sprint for a top ten on stage seven in Qinghai

New signing Kaden Groves took on the sprint for Mitchelton-BikeExchange on stage seven of the Tour of Qinghai Lake in China to take tenth place in the bunch kick.

After a strong team effort on the previous day by the Chinese outfit, the seventh stage saw the race tackle another first category climb and unfolded behind a breakaway trio that went clear over the opening kilometres.

Holding four minutes over the peloton by the halfway point the leaders pressed on and the last two riders from the earlier move were still dangling off the front as the race hit the closing 20kilometres.

Inevitably the duo was caught before the final as the sprinters teams took control of proceedings with Eduard Grosu (Nippo-Vini-Fantini-Europa-Ovini) taking his second stage win of the race and Groves up there in tenth.

Kaden Groves:

“I found today quite challenging on the climbs, they were short highway climbs, but a lot of teams attacked and that made for a fast pace and some high intensity.”

“The breakaway was brought back with about 30kilometres to go and after that more attacks came in ones and two’s but the finish was too quick for anything to stick so it was always going to be coming down to a sprint.

“I am happy with where my head and legs are at and I’m looking forward to the coming sprints to hopefully we can get up there and improve on today’s top ten.”
