Hamilton spends the day in the breakaway on the third stage at the Tour of UtahThu 9 Aug 2018
22-year-old Australian Lucas Hamilton animated today’s third stage at the Tour of Utah after spending the day in a 10 rider breakaway which lasted until the final 15kilometres.
With five finishing laps of five kilometres in Layton, the breakaway riders were finally caught and a bunch sprint concluded the day, won by Travis McCabe (United Healthcare) with Mitchelton-SCOTT's general classification hopeful Jack Haig finishing in the main bunch to remain in ninth place overall.
Mitchelton-SCOTT represented in the break
In the opening stages a formation of ten riders led the way. Hamilton, Tony Baca (303), Hamish Schreurs (ICA), Michael Rice (HBA), Jonny Clarke (UHC), Gage Hecht (AEV), Rob Britton (RLY), Damiano Cima (NIP), Laurent Didier (TFS) and Brendan Canty (EFD) opened up a steady advantage over the bunch and remained out front for the majority of the 167km stage.
Local finishing laps
Once the race entered the final finishing laps, the breakaway’s advantage plummeted and finally most of the leaders were swallowed up despite their efforts including Hamilton.
Only two riders, Canty and Britton tried their chances and attacked away from the group and held on to a 50second advantage, however with two laps to go, the sprint teams took control and they too were swept up.
General classification remains
With a large bunch finish, the peloton finished almost all on the same time meaning no changes to the overall classification but with three important decisive stages still to come, Haig sits comfortable in ninth place at 40seconds behind the leader Sepp Kuss (LottoNl-Jumbo).
"It was our plan today to watch any big moves go off the front and see if any dangerous moves were going then follow, all of us expect Haig were watching it and in the end I got away in a group of ten.
"It was pretty touch out there in the break but lucky for us we had a guy in there that was only two minutes down on the GC so sort of made the bunch keep things all under control. Overall it was a good day for the team with Jack finishing in the bunch and keeping consistent and up there on the GC."
