Hennessy sprints to eighth on stage one in Qinghai

Sun 22 Jul 2018

British sprinter Jacob Hennessy made a good start for Mitchelton-BikeExchange on a punchy opening stage of the Tour of Qinghai Lake in China today, sprinting to eighth place in a fast finale.

A lone breakaway rider escaped over the opening kilometres and quickly gained two minutes on the peloton before three more would be escapees bridged across and the peloton seemed happy to let the small group sit out there until the approach to the final.

With the bunch sprint never really in doubt in Mitchelton-BikeExchange sat tight in the peloton looking after Hennessy and Kaden Groves had maintained a good position towards to the front of the bunch until the last two kilometres.

A roundabout and some inconvenient road furniture knocked the Chinese outfit out of sync and they scrambled to try and get back into position with Hennessy doing well to achieve a top ten after the setback.

Tomorrow’s second stage is a flatter circuit race and will suit the team much better, covering ten laps of a 14.4kilometre circuit.

Jacob Hennessy:

“It was pretty fast throughout the stage today, especially over the top of the first climb and then the finish was quite hectic, but I think we can be happy with the result, it being the first time that Kaden and I have worked together in the sprints in a race situation.”

“Being back racing after a period of training always feels a bit nervy the first day and we know where we went wrong today and we’re ready to try and remedy that tomorrow. I felt like I was well within myself today and that gives me some confidence for the days to come.”
