Hindley and Meyer up with the leaders on stage three of the Tour of China

For the second mountain stage in succession Mitchelton-SCOTT tried to animate and shake up the Tour of China with Jai Hindley part of an attack on the penultimate climb before finishing with the frontrunners alongside compatriot Cameron Meyer.

The third day of racing China covered 140kilometres through the mountains around Pinchang in the Sichuan region and the start of the stage proved to be a closely marked affair.

All together after over the early climbs despite numerous attacks it wasn’t until the final third that a ten-man move finally went up the road that included Hindley.

Meyer instigated the first attack, but was closely marked by a large group of riders before Hindley countered and along with nine others managed to break free.

Gaining over a minute’s advantage the ten tried to push on over the rolling terrain towards the final ramp to the finish, but they were caught by the bunch on the approach before Joe Cooper (IsoWhey) unleashed a late attack to take the stage win.

Meyer took another top five placing from the chasing sprint, finishing in fourth place on the day and moving up to 11th on the general classification.

“It was another great effort by the guys again today,” said sport director Dave Sanders. “We wanted to try and take the race to the competition over the climbs and it almost worked for us. Cameron went first and then Jai went over the top of him and that succeeded in causing the split with around 30kilometres to go.”

“Cameron was being marked tightly by the other race favourites and everyone who could chased him down and that allowed Jai’s move to gain some ground. It’s unfortunate that it came back together before the final, but Cameron ended up with another decent finish after a strong sprint.

“We are gradually creeping up the overall classification and we feel that we’re in a good position going into tomorrow’s time trial. It is a short and flat course, only 3.3kilometres and for sure it’s going to be one of the strong guys who carry a lot of horsepower.”
