Hoskins rounds up Giro Rosa prologue top five

A strong ride by Melissa Hoskins has seen her place fifth in the opening prologue at the Giro d'Italia Internazionale Femminile this evening.

Hoskins finished the 2km race against the clock in 2’34.32, eight seconds behind winner Annemiek van Vleuten (RBW).

“I was really happy with Mel’s ride tonight,” sport director Gene Bates said.

“Coming off a training camp at high altitude, really preparing for the Commonwealth Games, she has had an exceptional ride and we were really pleased to see her finish fifth against some really strong time trial specialists.”

The 23-year-old was surrounded by an impressive Rabobank outfit who filled the remaining five positions in the top six.

“Rabobank were certainly dominant tonight, there is no other word for it,” Bates said.

“They have a number of riders in the top ten there, so they have a few cards to play. Sometimes it is not as easy when you have so many riders at the front so we will try to take advantage of a few different situations.”

Attention now moves towards the first road stage of the Tour, a 95km circuit race in Santa Maria a Vico.

“Tonight was about getting through it, opening the legs up and preparing themselves for a tough week ahead,” Bates said.

“We got through unscathed, we lost minimal time and we are looking forward to the racing to come now.

“I think there are some surprises coming up on the course that probably don’t look so obvious when you read through the race guide.”
