In His Own Words: Christian Meier on Tour de Beauce Stage One

Tue 11 Jun 2013

Christian Meier is riding the Tour de Beauce with the Canadian National Team. Although not a team race, Meier has agreed to check in with us daily so we can keep you updated on the six day tour from his perspective. In his own words, Meier describes his day.

The first day at Tour de Beauce couldn’t have been more typical. It was a cool, rainy day. The Canadian National team is fielding a strong line-up for this race. Gord Fraser is directing our seven strong squad that includes four WorldTour riders and three riders from strong domestic squads: Guillaume Boivin, Robert Britton, Nicholas Hamilton, Hugo Houle, Marsh Cooper, Dominique Rollin and me.

Our primary objective is to give me and Hugo Houle a shot at the overall. We’ll work for Guillaume Boivin in the sprints, and the rest of the team will fill in the gaps. The first stage saw a small group escape early followed by a mad chase as teams bluffed each other a bit about who would take up the chase.

In the end, with good work by our boys, the break came back in the closing kilometres. Boivin sprinted to second place in a very chaotic sprint, which saw a few riders hit the pavement. Hugo fell victim and is a bit scraped up now but otherwise should be okay.

Stage two looks set to be another sprint stage. We’ll give it another crack tomorrow and see if we can Boivin to the line first.
