In His Own Words: Svein Tuft on Circuit Sarthe Stage 2

Wed 3 Apr 2013

The morning stage of the Circuit Sarthe double day ended in a bunch sprint won by Nacer Bouhanni (FDJ). Focused on the afternoon time trial, ORICA-GreenEDGE hoped to get through the road stage unscathed and on bunch time. Mission accomplished. In his own words, Svein Tuft gives a quick run-through of the morning’s action.

The morning stage was short and pretty straightforward – a fairly flat course with no real wind today. It was the kind of stage where we just had to stay in the bunch and make sure nothing too dangerous went up the road.

Five riders got away. It was an easy break for the bunch to control. They were brought back on the finish circuits before the finish. As was the case yesterday, the circuit laps were quite dangerous with everyone fighting for position. Crashes can happen easily or the bunch can split when the race gets like this.

We focused on looking after Luke [Durbridge] and Aidis [Kruopis]. Our goal was to keep them safe up towards the front of the bunch. Usually once things settle down on a finish circuit, we would be able to relax a little. That hasn’t been the case yesterday or today. Everybody seems to think they’re a sprinter and that means there is a lot of wild action all the time.

Our guys made it through safely. There were some crashes in the bunch but nothing like yesterday, and luckily, today we weren’t involved. Luke finished on bunch time, which was our main objective, and now we’re getting looking forward to the time trial this afternoon.
